Tinnitus Support Group Newsletter
December, 2011.
We very much appreciated Claire Gatenby and Sam Riseley, from NNUH Audiology, who were the guest speakers at our last group meeting in October. They gave a very informative talk on what Tinnitus is, how it affects us and how we can employ various techniques to help reduce its effect on our everyday lives.
One point that Claire and Sam emphasised, was the effect that worry can have on tinnitus, and how it can create a cycle of tension that can keep the tinnitus worse than it could be. Learning to relax helps to reduce this tension and is one of the best ways to help ourselves.
Many people who practice regular relaxation say it reduces the loudness of their tinnitus and helps them become indifferent to their noises - the tinnitus is still there but it is much easier to ignore. Relaxation helps to break down the vicious circle of stress and anxiety many people find accompanies their tinnitus. There are a number of different types of relaxation - one of which is Tai Chi Relaxation.
We are very pleased to have David Barrow from Sheffield coming to our next Tinnitus Support Group meeting on 12th January, 2012. David will be speaking and demonstrating Tai Chi as a relaxation technique.
David has run the Tai Chi Balance Disorder Clinic for Hearing Services at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield for 9 years. He has studied Tai Chi in Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong and Shanghai. He has helped develop a program of Tai Chi exercises at the Royal Hallamshire that has been given the title ‘Clinical Tai Chi’ and results there have been very good.
I trust you will consider coming to this next Tinnitus Support Group meeting. Please give us a call or send an email to let us know you are coming.
May I take this opportunity to wish you a very happy Christmas and prosperous New Year.
Regards,
John Marcus
Tinnitus Support Group Coordinator.
